The Usual suspects

Sound
  • At the very beginning everything is quiet. When you first see the mysterious guy this is when the edgy music begins which implies he is edgy and the audience should fear him.
  • There is a really loud gunshot which foreshadows crime and danger.
  • Music gets louder as the explosion is shown. This is very dramatic.
  • The only dialogue in the whole thing is very quiet
Camera
  • There are a lot of over the shoulder shots. This makes the audience feel that tey are there therefore they are more pulled in and interested.
  • When you first see the Mysterious guy it is a low angle of him This makes you realise tat he is powerful from the beginning.
  • When the mysterious guy pulls out a gun we see it from a POV of the other guy. This helps you to get a bit of a feel of what he can feel.
  • The camera only shows the mysterious guys from the shoulders down, this leaves the audience wanting to know more.
Mise en scene

  • There is a lot of fire in the opening sequence which foreshadows the importance of fire in the film. It also makes the audience feel on edge.
  • Throughout the whole of the opening sequence the setting is all low lighting and very dark and grimy.
  • There is a gun which foreshadows crime
  • They are on a boat which suggests and gives the feeling that they're trapped and no way out.
  • There is an explosion which adds to the suspense, foreshadows crime and adds to the importance of fire.
Editing
  • The editing is very slow paced throughout the whole sequence. This will help to build suspense later on in the film
  • Everything goes slow motion when the mysterious man drops the cigarette. This suggests that this part will be important. Or it may just be a red herring.
