Evaluation of Iluzio

Evaluation Plan

We have decided as a group that it would be beneficial to all if we complete some evaluation questions as a group, but others as individuals. As a group we will complete questions 2, 3, 4 and 7. Where as questions 1, 5 and 6 will be completed on our own.

We have done this as we feel it will be more efficient and allow us to experience a range of technologies while still having our independent experience.

The departed

The dearted has to be one of the met famous thrillers around. Martin Scorses directed it in 2006. Within the first scene we are introduced to a man, however he is just a dark figure with no light on him. This suggests he is a dark character but also a key character because he's shown to us first. This guy straight away says "criminals" therefore we know already crime is involved and then as he is still speaking we cross over to guys in jail. This shows us the stereotype that men are aggressive and therefore go to jail.

We then come across to Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon. Who are very big actors in the thriller genre. Therefore by featuring these actors in the trailer a mass audience would of been brought in. However these two actors feature a lot and this goes to show us that they are a huge part of the film. Prevalence is used because they feature theses two the most and its to tell the audience they are important. As Matt Damon is shown to be a chief police officer and then Leonardo's character is shown to us to be training to be a police officer. These gives us hints on whats going to happen later because were been shown police officers. Mise En Scene helps us identify that they are police officers because of the smart uniform and the weapons shown.

We also have limited female characters that we are shown, only one female character  therefore we see that stereotypes are going to be presented here. We also have only male police officers done and also only male characters in the "gang". The background sound at the beginning in is tense but then breaks into more happier music which is unusual and un-stereotypical for thrillers.

We are shown a phone as a key prop in this opening and this is for the target audience to identify with the film. This is important to show that this characters are using such a common device.

They also then show us some FBI documents in the trailer. These help the audience gain some information that possible might be important however fast pace is done when these are shown. Therefore it means they aren't as important as some parts however it may because its secret and want people to feel like its real. Its almost like they are searching behind someones back thats why it goes fast pace.

Past Student Evaluations

IncOgnito Productions (level 4)

There evaluation looks very interesting as they have used many different technologies and have used screen grabs. I will definitely be using some of the technologies that they used.

Also as they did as a team they have made sure each person has done something, also they all have made sure they haven't just got one persons information in a question. They have used everyones.Question 5 really stands out because they have made it look interesting but also the quality of the writing is good. Also they hyperlinked to the thriller film and also had a play button for the music.

Also for Question 2 they used powerpoint however they made it interesting with the photos but they had loads of writing which answered every part of the question therefore this stood out.

Overall i can see why they got a level 4, from seeing theirs it has inspired me with what i can use and do in my evaluation.

Charles Evaluation (Level 2)

Looking at his Evaluation he didn't really write enough for some of the longer questions therefore lost out on marks. E.g. His first question doesn't involve a lot in the answer whereas he needed to of clearly demonstrated that he had a understanding of the key conventions in a thriller. As he only said "dark lighting and eerie music". There is more to thrillers that are key conventions. Also he didn't use any screen grape from his project to make it more interesting. Overall it looks un finished and not a lot of effort has gone into this question. This question had a lot that needed to be covered and wasn't.

Throughout most of his work he didn't use photos to show us what he was talking about therefore it was boring to just read everything.

However he did use 7 different technologies which were interesting apart from question 7 that he just wrote on the blog post but these will help me with my evaluation, and what i will use as my 7 different technologies. Also i think the use of Voki was a good idea but he just didn't cover enough information in each question. 

Therefore i know what i need to write in each question to get higher then a level 2.

Silly kiwi As Thriller opening - Amy Evaluation (level 3)

Question one was very good because it covered everything and she used power point as her choice of technology . The text boxes were easy to re4ad because they didn't contain to much writing, which meant it was easy to understand. Amy used lots of colours to make it interesting.
Question 7 really stood out because the technology she used was interesting, she also included a lot of detail into her writing. She also used screen grabs of her film to show us what she was talking about.
However in question 4 she didn't write a lot and wasn't in enough detail so she might of lost marks on this. Also she used powerpoint twice in her evaluation, so it would of been better to us something different. But overall she has a clear understanding and goes into a lot of detail her questions.

Leonardo Dicaprio

Dicaprio began attracting the attention of producers, who cast him in parts of roles in a number of television series, such as Roseanne (1988) and The new Lassie (1989), but it wasn't until 1991 that Dicaprio made his film debut in critters 3 (1991), a low budget horror movie.
Dicaprio really wanted to play Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby because he was drawn to the idea of " a man who came from absolutely nothing, who created himself soley from his own imagination". Gatsby is one of those iconic characters because he can be interpreted in so many ways such as : a hopeless romantic, someone who is obsessed or a dangerous guy who is clinging to his wealth.

Dicaprio has been one of the most common actors to appear in thriller films. He has played in many different types of roles and also in many different films such as : Shutter island, The Departed , Inception, Blood diamond, Body of lies and many others. He has won many awards such as: Golden globes - Best performer by a actor in motion picture in 2014, AFI award- Movie of the year in 2014, Austin film awards - best actor in The Departed in 2007 and many others. However had also been nominated for a massive load for the Golden Globes, BAFTA'S, Academy Awards USA, Oscars and many others.

Title sequence construction

We have started to construct our title sequence. We have used items such as type writes and pen & ink. We have taken inspiration from Se7en's title sequence, this gives it an old effect. We used dramatic music pair with it to create tension and put the audience on edge, This is also typical of thrillers.

Sleepy Hollow title sequence

Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow is an American supernatural drama thriller TV series that premiered on Fox on September 16 in 2013.

This whole title sequence really has the supernatural feel coming through because of the characters that are shown but also the lighting and old fashioned look also shows the supernatural theme.

We arent introduced to any characters in the first part however we are shown a horse with a red eye. The use of red is a connotation of danger,blood but lust. We see that this horse is a supernatural animal and possibly could be controlled. However we see that this horse is white, this contrast of the red and white is very interesting. Using white shows us that the horse is pure and innocent. However using both of these colours could show us that the horse is manipulated, controlled or that the horse is manipulating others and hiding the truth. 

We then come to what looks like two lovers coming together. However we only see them in the darkness and never get a close up of their faces which could mean they are possibly already dead. As the connotation of black is death and emptiness. From the scene being in darkness could mean they are hiding from others because their love could be forbidden. As the audience we feel tense because we don't understand whats happening.

Thirdly we come to a book that seems to blur out most of the writing. The only words we can see are "earth", "followed" and "name". These words could be showing us that they are important and they could be foreshadowing whats going to occur later on. However these words are hiding "kill". Crime such as murder is a key convention to thrillers.

She is the only one apart from the man, that we actually see. These characters are shown to us twice each which means they both are important and equal characters. We see her holding a gun which shows us she is breaking the stereotypical type of a female. She is challenging and showing us she is in power. We also see that these two characters possible are the protagonist characters because they seem to be protecting and searching for the supernatural.

 During the end scene we see a town which possibly is the town that everything is happening within and could be could Sleepy Hollow. However we see clouds rushing to cover up the town which could mean that they are in danger and someone or something isn't wanting to keep the town away from everyone else by covering the town up.

Sanctum Trailer

Sanctum

Sanctum is about a underwater cave diving team experiences a life-threating crisis during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world. The director is Alister Grierson. Alister has done a few films such as: Kokoda in 2006, Bomb in 2005 and various short films.

This trailer has the excitement, tension and suspense that a thriller trailer wants. As it starts off simple and no complications however suddenly changes the pace and starts with  a quick surpass scene of everything going wrong within the cave.

Sound

We start off this trailer with non- diegetic music to set the mood within the film. We hear off screen music with the heavy breathing and also have over voice off someone talking and telling us the story. We suddenly hit into fast pace and the music has a sharp noise that is unknown. The whole music in general is very dark and mysterious.

We then come into diegetic music with the helicopter flying around the massive cave. We are introduced to another voice that we don't know who's it is and they tell us again about the story but certain key parts of the story "others to chase history".

Then diegetic music is introduced again in the noise of something which we then find out is water. The cave starts flooding and we get painted because we see the characters worried and some even die. We see the struggle and panic in their eyes which makes the audience feel it also. The music becomes so dramatic here because its the key part of the trailer.

Mise-en-scene

We also see that lighting within the cave is dark to create that realistic feel for thee audience. This dark lighting is a key convention for thriller's because it shows the mystery side and tension. We only get to see their faces and the facial expressions are very key for this story because we need to be able to identify and relate to these characters.

The costume really helps us as the audience because it makes everything look so realistic. The costume shows us they are divers and researchers as the props also have all the equipment you would expect to see. Also the lights that they have on the helmets also show us that this is a key prop because its their only source of light and hope to find what they are looking for but also to escape.

Hannibal title sequence

Title Sequence

This title sequence isn't as complicated and as long as the others that I've looked at. However its full of mystery because we don't get to see the end product until the very last second. We see red liquid that could be blood or looks like red wine. When the liquid splashes its pushed aside by something in the way.

We don't see a character or a story just something growing and forming. However the text of the actors ands actresses names are in simple font however they are effective because they have the feel of thriller.

As we get closer to the end we get a closer look of what's forming. It looks like flesh and blood forming a human face. The use of this look could be showing us that things take time to develop and people don't change quickly it happens over a period of time.

We come to the finished product of a human face. We can tell if its a protagonist or the antagonist because its not giving anything away and only creating mystery. It also is telling us that this person has possibly they have lost the way in life and their identity.

Student Past work: Revenge title sequence

This Past student work is very clear with the title sequence. The use of the file cabinet is really effective because it makes us feel as they are stealing and searching through the files to reach the right one. We also see a effect over the top which is almost like fog. This looks like they want a blur effect, so people think its in the past. It gets the audience  questioning the whole thing however this is a key convention for thrillers, having people question the story.

I also think at the end when the antagonist rips the piece of paper from the cabinet makes the audience feel tense because its like they can't find what they want. 

They also don't use any bright colours. Apart from the yellow on the wall and the lighting on the note pad. Its very dull and dark which is a key convention for thrillers.

However i feel that the title sequence could be improved as its clear but needs something added to it to make it more exciting.

9th December Filming Date

We have planned another filming date as one of our scenes we thought was filmed, but turned out to be deleted on the camera. This is just the friend scene where they are discussing Freddie's arrival/life. We will be filming after school at Amy's house again. We will also film our title sequence!

Teen wolf season 4

This title sequence is very dark lighting which adds the dramatic feel. Its tense to watch because of it being so dark, also we feel that because of the darkness it could tell us something about the characters. Using the contrast of light and dark makes us tell that its a thriller.

Each part of the opening introduces us to a different character, to tell the audience a few seconds of their life. During this opening we firstly meet a red eye which then expands out to the character Scott who is played by Tyler. From him being first we can see that he is a important character and possibly the protagonist. However during the beginning we have the feeling of a super natural theme. The colour red is a connotation of danger and blood however this character has a wolf in front of his face before therefore we feel that he could be a wolf and changes into them. 

We also see the main character introduced to us because we have a look at his whole body. We see him jumping raising up from dust or ashes from a fire. However this move is very effective and dramatic and makes us feel that he is important as he looks down the camera lens. His name is almost like stone and is falling apart as we change to the next character because we see dust/ashes coming off the name.

We then come to Dylan who id playing Stiles who obviously plays a smart well educated guy who is human. We see this because he is surrounded by a map that has thread leading to something that we don't know. However we see photos that look like humans, wolfs and murders. Murders are a key convention to a thriller. Jackson is shown to us after Scott which could mean that Jackson plays the sidekick to Scott (the best friend).

We then come to another wolf which is more obvious to us because we see the fangs. We also see that he looks like he's in pain from something as he almost looks like he's screaming while the ash fly's off his body. It looks

like he's remind of something from the past. We see that he is  still in the darkness which could mean  because he's a wolf he has to hid who he really is.

We then come to Lydia who isn't shown to us much. The lighting also only lights up her face. This could be because they want to highlight the struggle and worry in her facial expression. We also have slow motion of her being dragged away by something which makes the audience intrigued.

We then see 2 different tattoos placed on the back between he shoulders then one located on the arm. These tattoos somehow grow. The camera being focused on these tattoos for so long could mean they are important, but makes us question why. They are in black ink which could mean darkness, dark magic and the supernatural.

Lastly we come back to our main character Scott. We finish on his face until "Teen Wolf" the title comes on the screen. We see both red in his eyes and a harsh facial expression. We see his face seeming to fade into the darkness which could mean he has to hid in the darkness. Overall this opening really helps us relate to the characters and also learn about them. The colours of black and natural skin colours also show us the supernatural theme. However we still get the un- answered questions and sense of confusion because we don't fully understand why they are who they are.

Title sequence plan

We are planning on filming someone either writing a diary or using a typewriter (if we can source one). We will be focusing on certain words such as 'imagine', 'death' and 'darkness'. This will foreshadow the rest of the film. We have taken inspiration from Se7en's opening sequence. This is because we think it creates mystery paired with the blurry effect which makes it seem imaginary.

We may also focus on the necklace which is in our opening. This is because it is a red herring within our opening and will therefore engage the audience as they wish to know the importance of it.
