Evaluation Plan

We have decided as a group that it would be beneficial to all if we complete some evaluation questions as a group, but others as individuals. As a group we will complete questions 2, 3, 4 and 7. Where as questions 1, 5 and 6 will be completed on our own.

We have done this as we feel it will be more efficient and allow us to experience a range of technologies while still having our independent experience.

This candidates first evaluation contains a lot of detail. He has divided the question into subheadings to clearly identify how it links to real media products. For example he has separate boxes for narrative, sound, editing, mise en scene, lighting etc. This is effective as you can clearly understand everything.

I also liked the video concept of their question 5. However some slides in this contained a lot of small text which was hard to read, and not enough time to read it. This could be improved by having a voice over summarizing each slide (which was done in question 6)

Question 6 was very effective. The voice over with appropriate screen shots and images made all the dialogue easy to take in and process. This is an effective presentation tool which I may also use for one of my evaluation questions.

The technology used in question 4 was voki. I liked this technique as it makes the answer a lot more interesting while still giving sufficient information. The only negative aspect of using this program is the limited characters you can use. This would make it difficult to use, but could be worked around if a different 'voki character' is used for different parts of the question.
This candidates question 2 used a creative program called Spicy Nodes. Each section of the question was separated and very detailed. However the layout of the program was very overlapped and sometimes confusing to read. This could of been prevented by changing the size of the embedded item, or screen grabbing and placing it as an image instead.
Overall I think the reason this candidate got a level 2 instead of 4 is due to the lack of detail and content that it contains. More images and attachments could of also been added to create visual links of the research to production process.

Amy's question one was very detailed and used power point. She did this by clearly dividing each section of the question into different slides. They also did not contain too much text, so was easy to understand. She also used lots of transitions and bright colours to make it more fun and interesting. 
Amy also used a power point for question three, this question was also very detailed and informative. However she could of used a different technology type for this question to make the evaluation more interesting.
Question 4 only contained 3 small paragraphs, this could of included more detail to make it clear exactly who their target audience was and why.
Question 5 was very visually interesting. Glogster was used for this question which allowed pictures to be clearly inserted to allow us to see what is being spoken about. I will use this program for one of my evaluation questions as it allows you to convey detail while also still being fun and interesting.

Title sequence construction

We have started to construct our title sequence. We have used items such as type writes and pen & ink. We have taken inspiration from Se7en's title sequence, this gives it an old effect. We used dramatic music pair with it to create tension and put the audience on edge, This is also typical of thrillers.

Title Sequence: Hannibal

This title sequence revolves around a red liquid forming a face. This could be interpreted as being blood. Therefore it suggests that blood and murder are a huge part of that person and make up the plot of that film.

These images have been placed on a white background to allow the image to stand out. The white also juxtaposes connotations of blood, as white is associated with innocence. Therefore the white could be a metaphor for Hannibal's innocent victims.

The title is then displayed, and is quite small in comparison to the screen, and is red. This allows it to be the main focus.

Finally the music is very high pitched and discordant. This will create tension as the audience will feel on edge and uncomfortable.

Final filming summary

Title Sequence: Dexter

The whole of this title sequence has a very murderous feel to it. Dexter is undertaking his usual morning routine but in a very disturbing manner. Blood is dripped, and food is cut in a violent and graphic manner.

Firstly the title of this sequence is red with a blood stain feel. This is due to the smudges and splatters. This therefore suggests that murder or death may play a role within the plot (Dexter is a murderer). This connotation is the juxtaposed with the white back ground which implies innocence. However the white is a slightly 'off white' and could suggest that innocence is manipulated and clouded.

Secondly shaving his throat has a very dangerous feel to it and has connotations of throat slitting and therefore murder. The sound of shaving which is paired with this has been sonically exaggerated. It has a very discordant feel to it and will put the audience on edge. From there we see the blood drip, it is suggested to be from shaving although we do not actually see it. This makes the scene very eerie as suspicious.

                                                                                   

While he was making his breakfast there was a close up of him cutting meat. This could be interpreted as being flesh as it is carried out quite violently. This adds to the murderous feel as the action is very brutal and conveys a feeling of Dexter having no mercy.

Dexter then cuts open and juices a grapefruit. A close up of the pink flesh inside has a look o human flesh. It is a rather graphic shot and is rather disturbing. This will put the audience on edge as they may not trust the actor due to his sheer brutality.

A close up is used while he ties his shoelaces. The first shot of this shows extreme tension and could be interpreted as a strangling image. This is showing Dexter's strength and power, therefore it shows it will play a key role within the plot. It also give the audience something to fear about him.

However all of these violent and brutal shots are then contrasted by him walking out in white, light clothing. These colours are usually associated with innocence and peace, which are clearly not characteristics of Dexter. This has been done to create confusion as the audience will not know how to feel about him.

The music has a creepy circus feel to it. Clowns are stereotypically a large fear for many people, this therefore indicates that Dexter is something to be scared of. The creepiness of the music will put the audience on edge by creating tension alongside with the graphic images.

The editing throughout this is quite slow paced, this is to allow the audience to clearly see what is going on to be able to focus on the graphic images. Cuts are used throughout this to keep it crisp and clear. Cuts also portray a very sharp sense and therefore also have connotations of his violent murderous ways.

9th December Filming Date

We have planned another filming date as one of our scenes we thought was filmed, but turned out to be deleted on the camera. This is just the friend scene where they are discussing Freddie's arrival/life. We will be filming after school at Amy's house again. We will also film our title sequence!

Title Sequence: Vertigo

A close-up of lips is used. This is usually associated with love and seductiveness. This therefore portrays the woman as desirable even though the audience have not yet met her.

Secondly the shot pans up to her eyes which are looking around. This creates mystery as it suggests she is looking for something, and therefore could be in danger. This shot then turns to a red colour. Red has a connotation of blood and death, this illustrates to the audience that the woman may die or become injured during the film. This will keep them engaged as they wish to know what to her happens and how.

The eye then fades to a swirl through action match. This implies that the next scene could be inside of her mind/ from her point of view as it is going inside her brain. However it also suggests she is not sane as the next section consists only of swirls.The swirls used throughout resemble finger prints but also DNA strands. This suggests there a biological aspect to the film. This would then lead to the audience feeling as though a crime scene is being investigated as DNA is being searched for. Crime is a common thriller convention and therefore is effective during this opening

The titles throughout this are all white. This makes them stand out on the dark black background. White has connotations of innocence where as black implies death and evil. These two contrasting colours will confuse the audience which is common of thriller films.

The music throughout is a mixture of string instruments. It is slightly discordant as there are many very high and loud notes. This will put the audience on edge and therefore create tension ready for when the film begins. It is also very dramatic music which will also create suspense as it suggests there is an event being led up to.

Title sequence plan

We are planning on filming someone either writing a diary or using a typewriter (if we can source one). We will be focusing on certain words such as 'imagine', 'death' and 'darkness'. This will foreshadow the rest of the film. We have taken inspiration from Se7en's opening sequence. This is because we think it creates mystery paired with the blurry effect which makes it seem imaginary.

We may also focus on the necklace which is in our opening. This is because it is a red herring within our opening and will therefore engage the audience as they wish to know the importance of it. 

Opening Sequence analysis: Casino Royal - Sound

Firstly the sound at the beginning of the opening consisted of very quiet background music (string instruments). This was to allow the focus to be on the man walking to his office. This is also emphasised by his loud footsteps, this suggests that he is alone in the building but however creates a very eerie feeling.

During the beginning of this scene a low angle of the man is used. This is to make the audience feel as though he is powerful as he is above the camera. However a few seconds later a high angle of him is show. This contradicts what was previously seen, and therefore the audience we become confused about the character. This is typical of thrillers as the plots are extremely complex we do not necessarily have a clear good and bad side.

The whole scene within the office/building has extremely dark lighting; this creates mystery as the audience cannot see everything. A common fear is the dark; this is due to the 'fear of the unknown'. Therefore this dark office will create fear in the audiences mind, as they will be unsure of the plot.

The editing within this scene is very slow paced and consists of only cuts. This is to keep the scene simple and allow the audience to understand what is going on. This also creates suspense as the conversation feels as though they are building to a tense moment.

The opening then uses cross cut editing to show a cricket match. This has been done to create a connection between the two and show that Bond may be in the office as a result of that day. This connection is also portrayed as the same quiet music is played throughout the two scenes. This helps the audience to understand what is going on and not get confused by the scene change.

 However once the other man is introduced (He spots Bond) the music becomes louder. This has been done to create drama and suggest there may be a chase scene. The cheering of the crowd is then used as a sound bridge. This juxtaposes what is happening as cheering is a sign of happiness, but the character is undergoing fear. However as this is paired with dramatic music the feel of the scene is still clear to the audience.

Within the cricket scene all the characters are wearing white, except Bond and the man who are in black. This emphasises the innocence of the audience and how they do not a play a role within the scene. However the two characters in black create a clear feeling that they are antagonists. This is because black within thriller films are associated with evil, death and darkness. This also leads to Bond being a very complex character, he 'does good in a bad way'. He shoots the man, but within the context of James Bond the men killed are usually far more evil than Bond himself.

 Once Bond and the man begin to fight the editing becomes very fast paced, this creates tension as Bond is in danger. This is also paired with sonically exaggerated punching, kicking and mirrors smashing. This portrays Bond as being very powerful as he is able to inflict this pain, but also brave and strong as he is able to take the pain and succeed. This will lead to the audience respecting him; Men will wish to be him whereas women will want to be with him.
